Whats with mass storage buildings all over. I noticed a new one in Maspeth on the side of LIE today on the way to the city. There are more and more of them going up all over for the past decade.

Are people running out of space to store their crap?
I also heard that city pays to store some of the belonging for the poor using those buildings, is that true?

I have storage. A lot of the larger units on the first floor where I rent are used by businesses. I'm not sure of the nature of the businesses but that's how it appears. One looked like someone dealing in used/antique furniture. Another guy I talked to is a carpenter or something and had nowhere at home to store his tools so he got a unit. Mine is also business related.

Apartments are getting smaller and smaller. Where else are people supposed to store their belongings?

I have a small one (though it is big enough to store several nice sized boxes), but I don't store anything in it. I use it primarily for getting deliveries when I won't be around to sign for them. I started doing this after having a few deliveries be sent to the wrong address or that went missing.

For example, my iPad stopped working on me suddenly, and so with my crazy schedule I was not sure when the delivery would arrive and it needed to be signed for, so I had it sent to my storage unit and they signed for it and called me when it was delivered. They hold onto it and I just come and pick it up when I can get over to do it. They are 24/7, which is also great (not all of them are), so when I have things sent from say Italy or whatever, I sometimes have it sent there if I won't be home. This avoids my items being stolen or having to have things re-delivered (FedEx has supposedly delivered things to me when I was home that I could not find to save my life, and it had to be re-delivered). Now if I don't care so much about the delivery, I'll have it sent home. Yesterday I got something delivered to my door without issue and didn't even know it was there until I got an alert on my phone. Previously I didn't have issues with things being misdelivered or stolen, but different times now.

In the event that I have many things delivered at once that I don't feel like bringing home with me, I can always just put it in my storage unit until I'm ready to get it. It saves a lot of aggravation.

IMO, a combination of factors over the past decade.

- huge growth in transplants and roommate situations in NYC. M and people have less private square footage and move more often.

- the disincentivization to build housing. It's more profitable to build storage units than housing.

- the huge uptick if private home rentals. Whereas homeowners used their basement or spare bedrooms as storage, many now rent those out and acquire storage space.

Another sign of how utterly incompetent and corrupt the politicians are in this city.

We have some of the highest RE prices in the country and developers are choosing to build storage units . Think about it.

Last thing we need is more buildings and more people in this city.

Storage companies are building facilities all over the city. Not surprising in a city of renters.

Which storage do you use? Where in the city? How long have you had it, and have you noticed any environmental issues (meaning insects/rats, humidity/mold, and similar)?
