This Sunday, I'm flying to New York for the summer to do an internship. Having never been to the city, I thought I would have a few days to get things figured out. Unfortunately I won't and will have to go to work on Monday morning.
I will be living in Brooklyn Heights. I will be taking the 2 or 3 train at Clark St. and will need to end up at the 66th St. Lincoln Center stop which is serviced by the 1 train. I will need to transfer somewhere in the middle.
Is there a better stop then the others to do this at? Is there a better way to get from my point A to point B then I've laid out? Any tips or advice to make it easier would be greatly appreciated.
You can transfer to the 1 from the 2/3 from the Chambers St., 14th, 34th and your final chance at 42nd. St. stations All of those stations you just transfer right across the platform.
I do NOT recommend transferring at 34th St. You have to go down stairs, cross underneath and then climb up to a different platform. If your 2 or 3 train gets to 14th St. and you happen to notice a #1 across the platform, that might be the time to transfer. Otherwise, do it at 42nd or (in good weather) take K 22's good advice and stay on the 2/3 to 72nd for a nice, short walk along B'way.
I live a block from the 66th St. station on the #1 line, but if I'm on an express, I often just take it to 72nd and stroll back down home. In any case, you have a pretty direct, uncomplicated commute.
I'll second (third?) the recommendation to ride to 72nd Street and walk downtown a few blocks. That'll give you the chance to see a little bit of the Upper West Side, and it's not a bad walk. If you don't want to do that, though, then transferring at 42nd Street is your best bet.
I don't mind walking if getting off at the 72 St. stop is more efficient. How does one know they're getting on an express train? I assume you can only do this at the stops with the white circles on the map? Can I do it from Clark St.?

Only the #2 and #3 stop at Clark Street and both of those trains run express in Manhattan. 72nd Street is 8 stops from Clark (Clark, Wall, Fulton, Park Place, Chambers, 14th, 34th/Penn Sta./MSG, 42nd/Times Sq, 72nd) so you're looking at roughly a 20-25 minute commute.
As far as how you can tell you're getting on an express train, there's plenty of signage on the stations telling you whether a train is running express or local. Some of the newer trains have a computerized announcing voice and will actually say it's an express train. The #2 train is using these new trains and the ladies voice will actually say something like: "This is a Bronx-bound 2 express train".
