Making matters worse many motor vehicles now are made with soy based coating on wires. It's like catnip to all sorts of rodents (rats, mice, squirrels...) so they're also chomping down on wiring.
If things are this bad now, wait until cooler and cold weather arrives.
Part of attraction for rodents is motors in modern vehicles remain warm for hours after being parked and shut down. This makes engine area a nice cozy spot for rats, mice or whatever to snuggle up.
NYC produces around 33 million tons of trash a year — more than any other city on Earth! But remember that female rats can mate around 500 times in a six-hour period and one mother rat can breed up to 15,000 offspring's annually!
For a long time, the number of rats in New York City was unknown, and a common urban legend declared there were up to five times as many rats as people.
That's lot of rats!
Since the start of 2022, the Big Apple has seen its worst infestation since 2010 — the first year that rat sighting records were made public online.
A Department of Health spokesperson said that an abundance of food waste — partly caused by an uptick in outdoor dining — has led to the rise of the rats.
The City Council is also gnawing on Adams to inject $22 million into its budget to expand trash basket pickup to twice a day as opposed to once. That’s in addition to another $5 million for rat-catching utilities.
I fear that all that is still not enough.
Here is a list of 25 most rat infested cities in the world. Sixteen of them are in the US. First 7 places are cities in the US.
Why are we unable to better control them?
Rats lives Matter.
If we can take in illegals by the bud load every day, surely native NY rats can get some love too no ? At least they are self reliant.

Yup. RATS LIVES MATTER... RLM... That's why Adams et al is going to keep pushing outdoor dining, to make sure his friends are well fed (literally and figuratively).
City has always had rodent problem, but last few years things have gone into overdrive IMHO. Am seeing rats and mice in places hadn't previously.
Walking down 86th other night between Lex and Third nearly every tree bed had rats scampering out of them. Good number of rats were about those huge trash bins Target puts out each night (so much for theory containers keep rats away).
People know on 85th between Third and Lex also are seeing tons of rats. They have long been on corner around Starbucks, but now are running around up and down entire block.
So the whole City should be rat infested because some communities have been dealing with it for 20 years at least? Make it make sense.
My point is that it has been a problem in some communities already for a long time. What's being done to help the residents along Riverside Drive that have been suffering with this problem for at least 2 decades already? That's my point.
Not for nothing, this problem is not exclusive to NYC. People in rural areas have problems with mice entering their cars too.

The City has been working to mitigate the issue in neighborhoods that have rat infestation problems for years and spending a lot of money to do so - everything from changing out the types of garbage cans to ones that are fully enclosed, to more frequent pick-ups, to baiting areas with rats, etc.
It seems like a moot point to ask about areas that have had rat issues because that is precisely why the City needs to double down on the problem to avoid having it spread further, as if the City wouldn't try to do anything about something that is a clear health and safety issue. Most of the neighborhoods with rat infestation problems are in Manhattan (Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Harlem, Lower East Side, etc.) and the fact that the issue has persisted so long shows how difficult they are to eradicate.
