I’m an airline pilot looking to get on with a new airline and many airlines have bases in New York. Granted some are out of LaGuardia or Newark as well, but I have a Jet Blue interview coming up so I’m focusing on JFK. I don’t have a good sense of the neighborhoods and such being from the other side of the country but I’m thinking I might just get an apartment somewhere within easy reach if JFK. Hoping to stay around the $1,500 range if possible. And of course I want a reasonably safe neighborhood, walkability and access to the subway would be pluses but not critical. Any advice appreciated.

Look up on StreetEasy for rents in Jamaica Estates neighborhood. It's close to JFK, easy access to subway train (mainly F train) & buses, even there is bus Q3 the route is all the way to JFK. The rent is still affordable, it's like around $1500 for a studio & less than $2K for 1BR. Jamaica Estates is relatively safe neighborhood, I lived in the area for several years.

If you're a white male, the surrounding areas of JFK aren't the best of places to be. Not safe. And in this current crime ridden climate the city is in, you really don't want to be living around there.

If you look at a map you'll see a road called Woodhaven Blvd. Once you are North of Atlantic ave, there are some decent areas with some nice apartment buildings. I'd look at Woodhaven, Kew Gardens, Forest Hills and Middle Village. Basically between Atlantic ave to the south and the Long Island Expressway (495) to the North is the "safe zone." Queens doesn't have many good areas left but these would be ok for a single guy (not to raise a family). You'll have access to the subway and walkability. Not sure how you'd get to JFK however. Most of us drive to the airport. Maybe there's a bus that gets you there.

If you do get a car, the best parts of Queens are in the North East areas of Whitestone, Bayside, LIttle Neck and Douglaston. Relatively safe.

Rents I have no idea. I'd expect $1200 minimums.

Try Howard Beach Queens.
" Old Side" closest to J.F.K.
A number of pilots reside there.
Ultra safe neighborhood. Walkable.
Police presence patrolling neighborhood.
A Train to the City or take the Train to the plane....
Local and Express Bus Crossbay Blvd. available.
Many amenities. Car 5 minutes
Walking 15-20 minutes. Day or night.
Rents are a little more than $1,500. $1,800 and up
for a furnished basement apartment. Bay views.
Ocean breeze. Charles Park.

Best Wishes.

I would say Kew Gardens along the Q10 bus line (which goes to JFK) or alternately Forest Hills/Rego Park from which one has subway access to the city and one can either connect to the Q10 or to the Airtrain (in Jamaica).

Kew Gardens used to be and may still be a popular place for airline personnel to live. It was known as a place where many stewardesses lived because of the many transit options and being close to both LGA and JFK. If your airline has young flight attendants you should ask them to recommend a place to live.

You'll have to up your housing budget a little but look into Rockaway, a short subway ride (A train) away from JFK.

Wouldn't that be a subway plus Airtrain?

Look into Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and Rego Park. All nice safe neighborhoods with easy commutes to JFK.
