They can’t afford anything else. That doesn’t mean they deserve to live in such terrible conditions.
Nonesense. Some can but the rent is too cheap to give up. Others can't only because the cheap rent gives them an excuse not to work or strive to increase their income.
Still does not mean they deserve this. They are human beings - come on
Of course they don't deserve it. On the other hand, there's no free lunch. How many countless stories have there been of NYCHAs with major issues (lead, crime, asbestos, etc.). People make a deal with the devil to use the system. No one can claim this surprised them.
Jackson, MS. Newark, NJ. Flint, MI. SandBranch TX. Jacob Riis Houses (NYC). And on and on.
I see a pernicious pattern of purposeful environmental destruction here.
So pernicious that these are taxpayer funded far below market rent (practically free) apartments in one of the most desirable city's in the world that generations of families abuse.
i'm FOR getting rid of NYCHA, but they gotta find housing for those folks or give em a package to set em up somewhere else
NYCHA is by far the biggest slumlord in the city with the most violations per building. Partly because unlike private landlords, NYCHA doesn't care about violations that result in any kind of monetary fines. They only fix things when there is potential criminal liability or are so egregious that they violate even federal law.
They should leave the elderly in NYCHA if they want and give Section 8 type vouchers to the rest. Slowly privatize and sell off NYCHA buildings to developers as they empty out, with a stipulation that if they build new projects on the land, they have to restore the street grid, and not continue NYCHA tower-in-the-park planning. That will also fix some of the dead-end streets in the middle of the city.
I thought I was the only one to notice a pattern. Look up Allensworth CA going back to 1966 as well. Some aren't going to get it...
The pattern is that areas that have been managed by the Dems for like the last 100 years suck and are so dilapidated that even their basic infrastructure is failing. Thats what you get when you divert funds for decades for pet social causes instead of on the things that actually matter.

That's not what I'm referring to...I was expecting that type of response.
