NYC proposes yellow taxi rate hike — Manhattan evening rush base fare up to $9.50, Kennedy Airport flat fare to $65
The cost to ride a New York City yellow taxi would go up by roughly 23% under a new proposal put forth by the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
It would be the first hike for metered taxi rates in New York City in 10 years, and would would jack up the price of yellow cab rides in every corner of the city while putting more money into the pockets of struggling cabbies.
Officials aim to raise the base fare and surcharges for any ride from $3.30 to $4.50. Taxi riders have since 2019 paid an additional $2.50 for trips that start or end in Manhattan below 96th St, and officials said that fee would not change.
The hikes would increase the surcharge for yellow cab rides that start from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from $1 to $2.50; and for overnight rides from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. from 50 cents to $1. Officials also aim to increase the price taxi riders are charged for every 1/5th of a mile they travel from 50 cents to 70 cents.
NYC gets many out of towners, those who come to do business with Wall Street, they are high level execs with expense accounts, they also tip well.
After business hours, they go to dinner, night clubs, and taxi drivers prefer to work nite and make good money
