I often see people leaving their car running in Queens when they go in to grab a coffee at a place like Dunkin Donuts. I don’t know if the actual key is in the car. My car has remote start but it needs to have the key to be driven. I can start my car from inside my home but without the key the engine would shut off when the brakes were pressed to shift into drive.

I have walked by cars with closed doors with nobody inside but the engine is running. I assume that owner is nearby and turned on the engine remotely, therefore planning to get in their car very soon.
Every month at the 68th precinct community (Bay Ridge) meeting the commander has to make an announcement reminding people to lock their cars as people in the nice areas near the water are having "break-ins" that are made easier by the forgetful or careless drivers.
