I'm not a Native (only visit the City 3 times a yr---and when i do, i'm in a Hotel or inside an biz office).
We read about CRIME WAVE in NY, BUT APPARENTLY This is 'Over-blown Hype' ----as New Yorker's keep re-electing Politicians who CLAIM; 'There is no problem~'
HOW BAD are the Biker Gangs and Hoodlums wreaking havoc in NYC?
Here's someone reporting the Cycle gangs in the City----and 'No one doing ANYTHING' to stop them.

Is it as bad as the MEDIA REPORTS or are they just trying to 'sell papers?

Life long Queens native born/raised. Late 40s. White male.
Yes, they are wreaking havoc. Are they the Hells Angels of the 1970s getting into bar fights? No. But from what I've seen only in my part of Queens, they take over streets of all types at any time of the day they want. Now, to be fair, I have not witnessed any crimes taking place as a result (aside from the crime itself of riding illegal motorbikes/atv's) but they are intimidating to many people.
What is truly scary is the NYPD has absolutely no control over them! None.
ugh, I'm so glad I no longer live in a neighborhood by the exit on the highway. They were always active on Sundays making loud noises and basically bullying all vehicles who got in their way.
Scooters and bikes are used too. Even cars I read for several robberies. With being preoccupied about people on the sidewalks who might try to rob you, the former is easy to not see coming.

The reactionary responses on this forum to crime in the city are overblown. The site below shows that NYC is nowhere near the top cities in terms of rates of violent crime. I feel much safer here than I would in Little Rock, AK (highest violent crime rate in the entire nation as of July 2022), or Houston TX (#10 in 2021, and #14 in 2022).
