These were educated taxpayers - not someone who needs benefits like we see moving here.

Let's add that NY State have many very good colleges but most who move here for college - leave after getting their degrees.

While I'm moving out of state now - should our circumstances change - financially - I'd move back to NY in a minute for their benefits - but remember I'll be another on the rolls of the social program for which our high taxes pay.
NY has always been a big immigration state, even when your ancestors came here. Some that move in come due to industry factors as well.

Ironically, NY isn’t even top 10 per capita in terms of welfare recipients https://worldpopulationreview.com/st...ients-by-state

This doesn’t even get into the aspect of giving more to the Federal government than it gets back: https://smartasset.com/data-studies/...overnment-2022 (NY is 42nd)

Many that leave range from retirees, some that are more blue collar and some that are “educated” as well.

To the previous post, if you go by the actual 2020 census, the state hit 20 million people for the first time. Over the past couple of decades, estimates would show losses, but official censuses would show a modest population gain. This is illustrated to the right: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demogr...ew_York_(state) So, we will see once the 2030 census comes out.

I love this one. But ya'll never bring up the fact that there would be no country if not for all the red staters that LITERALLY are in the military stopping the likes of China and Russia from coming to town. The same red staters that beat back the Nazis in Europe.

NY's contribution has been a pittance. Ya hear? A damn pittance.

What does this have to do with the topic, even if it is true?

Well, this is a result of progressive taxation, of which the Left / Democrats champions. Since NYS is a high earning state, it therefore has to pay higher taxes than say, a West Virginia, which is a lower earning state, which pays less taxes.

You know, the whole “make the rich pay, wealth redistribution” mantra the Leftists love. Don’t complain now.

Exactly! If a state was getting back exactly what it gives there wouldn't be any point of taxing in the first place, would there?

Military bases are heavily concentrated in red states, and that is part of the redistribution disparity.

So then, does this drastic loss of population help explain why our rents are so low <sarcasm.>

Or you can get back what you deserve/put in.

As for the military base aspect, NY State has military facilities/bases in Ft. Drum, West Point, Ft. Hamilton, the Watervliet Arsenal and a Naval facility in Saratoga Springs. This doesn't include the ANG Bases just outside of Syracuse, Niagara Falls, Newburgh, Rome, Scotia and Westhampton Beach. Let alone the former Plattsburgh AFB and multiple Coast Guard facilities within the state. So, NY State has its share of military coverage as well and I'm probably forgetting about a couple of others.

The share of federal facilities to GDP is just higher in red states, because they are willing to put up greater share of "unwanted" federal facilities, from military bases and prison complexes to nuclear waste disposal sites, etc. The blue states simply outsource those facilities and refuse federal money, so they become the 'donor' states. In reality it is not the case. I am sure if NYS was willing to set up a nuclear test range and a nuclear lab like they did in New Mexico, NYS can also become a 'net-taker' state, however I highly doubt people would want it. The blue states routinely refuse federal funds for all kinds of reasons and most of the facilities we do have (like the ones you listed) are legacy programs that were approved in some cases a hundred years before, pre-dating current ideological/political makeup of NYS. If it would be up to current NYS pols, none of those facilities would've been approved today and we'd become the #1 donor state in those stats.

Yet, we do have military bases, federal correctional facilities(Otisville in Orange County, Ray Brook in the Adirondacks and a couple in NYC) and multiple nuclear storage sites(West Valley Demonstration Project in Cattaraugus Co., R.E. Ginna in Wayne Co.; along with James A. Fitzpatrick and Nine Mile Point in Oswego Co.). So, NY State has those types of facilities as well.
