NYS has only one approved vendor to get birth and death certificates. They cost $15. But then vitalchek adds on a $8.50 processing fee and a $ 20 shipping fee. Plus taxes. PER RECORD. The final fee for a death certificate I had to order was $43 or a nearly 300% markup from the original $15. These no bid contracts with city agencies enable this kind of abuse to go through.

ConEd has BillMatrix, NYC uses VitalChek. Note City makes it clear there are other online services to obtain birth or death records but they not only charge more, but perhaps cannot be trusted. VitalChek is only such company certified by NYC which means something anyway.

In any event you don't have to use an online service to obtain copies of birth or death records. In person requests are still done but now require an appointment.

You would think that ordering online is more convenient for them than going in person. But instead, the city penalizes you for saving them time and money!!!

Actually many states use them and they are quick. They are providing a service, hence it will cost more than going into a govt office.

We are using VitalVheck to get a birth certificate from Indiana. What I don’t like is once they submit your request for you there is no way to check on progress from the side of the State. The submit the request and their job is done.

When I go to the Indiana web site, they say they are about 6 months behind in servicing requests, and there is no way to even check if they got your request.

As one stated Con Ed, IRS and others also have fees when paying online via CC or debit card.

There are associated merchant account fess for using a CC or debit card that usually are simply passed onto consumer by being built into price of goods or services. Obviously a public utility or government agency simply cannot do that so they came up with another way.

Have you complained to them, instead of to us?

And is it possible to get it directly from the office? I'm wondering if it's like Unclaimed Funds, where you can pay an intermediary, or do it yourself for free.

Well we finally got the Indiana birth certificates we ordered through Vitalchek back in July 2022 delivered today, 8 months later.

I actually gave up a few months ago waiting for it, and ordered the certificates myself again directly, following the procedure on the county website. The county sent them back in about 2 weeks.

I do not find fault with vital check.
Their hands are tied up by the Department of Vital Records.
Make sure to cross your T's and dot your I's on documents.
Only specific ( ex: S.S. is insufficient ) proofs of I.D. are acceptable.
You are in for a long and painful session that can last months to years
if you can not produce paper work that they want.
