Happy & Prosperous New Year of the Rabbit (or Cat) to all who are celebrating!

Yesterday I saw part of the annual celebration at Queens Center. I think there is another celebration today at Queens Place.

In past years I have gone to view either the main parade in Chinatown in Manhattan or the secondary parade in Flushing (Queens).

Any other major interesting Asian New Year celebrations around NYC this year?

They are holding a NY concert this weekend for those interested in traditional Chinese music (I am not…).

Side note but where do you get cat from? I'm quite sure the Cat doesn't have a role in the Chinese zodiac...

In Vietnam they celebrate the Year of the Cat (and not the rabbit)!

There are some variations. Cat -Tiger, Rat- Mouse, Goat -Horse. Or so I've heard.

Cat is used in Vietnam and Thailand. Tiger replaced cat in China Korea and Japan. Why?

Ancient story. Many years ago, the gods invited the animals to the zodiac festival to be chosen. Each boarded a raft to cross the river. In the distance they could see the fireworks explode in the sky and were riveted. Cat was near the front and all her attention was focused. She did not see the sneaky rat go behind her and bite her tail hard. The pain made her jump up and fall into the river. By the time the soaked cat made it to shore the party was over.

This is why to this day, cats hate rats and water.

There's always a fair on 8th Avenue in Brooklyn the Sunday following the new year if I remember correctly.

This is the Year of the Water Rabbit.

Supposedly a peaceful and tranquil year. Fingers crossed.
