Forgot to ask my biggest question - how prevalent are bugs in apartments, and any way I can know prior to signing a lease?

You will get bugs and maybe even rodents. Doesn't matter how clean you are. Old buildings and trash on the streets attract them.

It does change things. When you're not taking the subway to commute to work, you can do it more leisurely. So walking 10-15 minutes is okay.

What about highrise buildings? This is a dealbreaker for me, I can't do bugs

You will probably do better the newer and the taller the building, but eventually, the bugs will find your apartment. Pipes, wall voids. Older apartments, there will almost always be roaches. The worst one is bed bugs, which I know some people had issues in Astoria with neighboring apartments having them.

I think it is difficult in the long term to completely avoid seeing a roach or two at some point no matter where one lives in NYC.
