I used about once a year on a yearly visit to someone on Brooklyn/Queens border. But since most people do have unlimited data plans it's not as necessary as in the past.

Why don't you use an OMNY card or a credit card then? There's no reason why you need to use your phone unless you want to.

And being without internet for a short bus ride is a big problem for you?!
As already mentioned one can get OMNY card (for when the Metrocard stops being valid). So one doesn't/won't need a smartphone to use the MTA.
