An argument can be made that the cops also protect the criminals from the citizenry. Less cops should lead to an increase vigilantism and street justice. Which is want the American hater politicians will love. Roving street gangs, and more destruction of the middle class.
I bet they'll be happier in Florida, Texas and Arizona. Going to get better housing instead of the crappy & expensive apartments in the NYC. They should speed up so the door don't hit their rear ends. Good riddance!
Let's be honest here. It's mostly white guys dropping this job and various immigrants, black, and Hispanic NYCers will gobble these jobs up. Guaranteed 6 figures in under 10 years with great benefits and a pension is a godsend to most of them.

My nephews friend bailed a few weeks before him, for the same reasons, and he is black as night, so I don’t know if that theory holds water. Also left NY.

I can’t fathom how you present this as an insult. But hey, look at NYC and who willingly remains. The proof is in the pudding.

Are they wrong? Probably not ,although the scale was much smaller (city jobs have exploded as a share of overall jobs in NYC during the last decade).
NYCs current cropOf politicians don’t care if there’s an “exodus” of whites from the NYPD. Thats not their voting block and in fact, it opens up spots for those who may be in their voting block.

Over time certain city jobs were taken by different ethnic groups, that's true. The NYPD was at one time heavily Irish and German, later many Italian-Americans joined the NYPD. But from 1901 until only a few years ago cops were expected to be cops, and act like cops. That meant height and physical requirements like being able to chase down a perp in a dark alley somewhere. Cops were expected to be tough and to be feared by thugs including Irish-American thugs and Italian-American thugs back in the day.
What's happening now is totally different. Under Bail Reform, Discovery Reform, and issues involving personal immunity, a cop can no longer be a real cop. 4 of the 5 DA's in NYC are confirmed cop-haters. Only Staten Island DA Mike McMahon understands his job is to work with the police because he is a prosecutor, not a defense attorney. The cops on SI still do their job because they know the DA and the citizenry are behind them. It helps that nearly all the cops assigned to the SI precincts also live on SI.
What's troublesome that if it's mostly white cops leaving then does that mean that black and some hispanic cops are o.k. with the NYPD becoming another welfare program? I really don't know.
