We're living in district 26 right now and due to extenuating circumstances, we have to move. I love the diversity and vivacity of Queens, but we can afford a small home on Long Island, in New Hyde Park, or Mineola. The school ratings for district 26 are excellent, but there are many reports of overcrowding and competition. Is this really the case? If so, then maybe Long Island is better for schools. Can anyone provide some insight. Thanks.
Long Island schools offer more options than district 26-better music departments, better sports options. Same kids, but more and superior (IMO) programs. Also, middle schools and high school will be just around the corner. Getting into a "decent" NYC MS/HS is problematic and time consuming. If you move to Long Island, you don't have to spend hours and hours looking for a middle school or high school for your child. It's automatic.
We are close to mineola and picked a house with the best school district we could afford. Small class rooms, good ratings. That’s all we wanted for our kids.

There is a sweet spot of convinience in district 26.
If you live over by Bryant HS, you will have ps,is,and hs all in walking distance. Along 31st ave...
it maybe be tough, but a rent controlled 2br apartment can be found for a reasonable price. Takes some footwork.
Schools may look better in Long Island, but the housing prices are not cheap. Somewhere north of the city might be a more affordable fit.
We stay in our area for convinience and comfort, but yes, it is expensive to live/own in NW Queens.

Bryant is in School District 30 which is not remotely close to the area the OP is considering.
You're thinking of Council District 26 which is a completely different thing.
