That place nearly went out of business when the owner decided to publicly abuse his customer base in the locals papers. Look at their hours, it’s only open a few days a week now. It used to be booming.
I've been there both when it was entirely Italian nonnas and afterwards when it was opened up to grandmas from other cultures as well, and it's been pretty great every time. It's certainly not formal fine dining, but I think what's remarkable is how professional the consistency and service seems to be which I didn't quite expect. It makes me wonder if these grandmas are almost exclusively those who are used to cooking for massive extended families.
We used to go all the time. Then the owner publicly told us he hates us.
I think there were a lot of heated political statements at the time, and I can see how unappealing that would be. I generally just take that in stride and assume people make stupid generalizations and publicly stupid statements, but can still mostly act in a decent enough manner.
Food's still solid from the last time I was there and the concept is surprising in that it works nearly as well as it does. I think scaling up from home cooking isn't always that successful and is the death of a lot of restaurants that start from someone who's a good home cook.
I refuse to give my money to people who openly hate me. It's bad enough that we can't verify the thousands of businesses and such we frequent. When one admits it, bye bye.

Shame because yeah, they're very good.
Yea, I agree it was a stupid generalization, and hopefully he's learned from it.
Grandmas are still cooking very solid food throughout.
