Man I have a bunch of thoughts/advice.

- I worked in media/advertising for a couple of decades in Manhattan and find it incredibly ironic that Hearst, a media company that owns TV/Newspapers, has a CEO who never, ever hired black/hispanic folks. How do I know this? Like I said, I worked in the "biz."

-To expand on above, not only would a corp like Hearst discriminate against minorities they would also discriminate against white ethnics from the boroughs. You know, the Irish, Italians, Jews and Greeks. Most minorities think all white peeps are the same. Lol. Hellz now. We not. Those corp hacks in management are almost always WASP (protestant whites from English maybe German descent). They looked down on catholics, greeks and jews. It took me about a year in the business before I realized it. Mid 90s. And it's still going on today. Trust me.

-My biggest piece of advice to 22 year old me as well as ANY kid hispanic or black from urban areas is....master the English language. People in corporate America immediately will judge you by the way you speak and write. Both are equally important. After a month at my first job, I realized I had to start hiding my thick Queens accent and start correctly enunciating my words. It was quite visible not only to people in my office but clients who come from all parts of the country. And as bad as my accent and slang was, it was triple worse when black and hispanic prospective employees would interview or actually land a job. They immediately were labeled "poor city folk." This is actually why I always bonded with minorities in the work place over white wasps from places like CT, Westchester or the midwest. We just had more in common.

So kids out there, stop with the n word this n word that and stop speaking like your fav hip hop artist and start mastering enunciation of words and grammar in your writing. You'll be amazed at how far it will take you in your carreer.

As for Asian kids, the knock on them when I was coming up was lack of personality. They just never vibed with anyone. I guess it was a cultural thing.
