Hi,

I received an offer for a job with the City of New York (there was a civil service exam for the position, I got on the list, then I evenutually got called for an interview recently). As I understand it, job offer is conditional, dependent on background check of job history etc., which is apparently now being conducted after I submitted pre-employment forms (CPD-B etc.) I'm not sure how long that process will take, they were kind of vague about it.

Then, on Friday I got an email for a different City agency for a job that I also took an exam for and got on the list saying a hiring pool is coming up for that job in a few days and to email my resume if I'm interested.

I am interested in the second job and it also pays more, but I also don't want to jeopardize my process with the first job and don't even know if I would be allowed to respond to another job interview if I've been given a conditional offer for the first job?

Anyone have any insight or info or know how I could get additional information about this or research it further? I need to respond quickly

Thank you!

The background check and such for the first takes about 30-45 days. Stay on the list for the second job and then when one of the two contacts you then take it. You can always leave one for the other if it suits you. Congrats and be well.

Go for both. If you get the one you want you can always turn down the other. Until you actually start you are not employed. One agency won’t know what the other is doing. Unless you are going for a uniformed position the background check comes back quickly. The Fed’s give up the information usually by the same day when you complete fingerprints.
