Hi

Can anyone provide suggestions for taking public transportation from Philadelphia to NYC. I usually take a bus by Apex bus, but they will not leave until 8am and I need to be in NYC by 9am so they won't do. I believe I can use Septa from 30th Street, but I am not sure what to do from there. Anyone out there that has made this trip have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can take the SEPTA to Trenton and from there change trains and take the Northeast Corridor NJ Transit train to Penn Station.

Or you can take AMTRAK right to Penn Station with only a couple of stops and no change of trains.

Take the Regional Rail (SEPTA) to Trenton (last stop) and simply change for the NJ Transit to New York. The trip on NJ transit is about 90 minutes.

Greyhound has a weekday bus (you didn't specify which day, and I don't feel obligated to check weekend schedules) that leaves Phila at 5:30, arrives Port Authority at 8:00 a.m. and one that leaves at 7:00 and arrives at 9:00. If you book in advance online, it's not much more than a Ch'town bus. Check the site for extra discounts.

If you run a websearch for "Discount buses, New York City, Philadelphia" you may find one with a schedule that suits you.

I just made this trip the other weekend. The trains often wait for each other and meet on the same platform, so it is very easy. If you use the NJ Transit site, you can enter Philadelphia and New York Penn Station in the trip planner and see all of the schedules. It takes at least 2 hours.

I have taken both these trip and can tell you that the 5:30 has to stop in Newark 1st before heading into the city.

The 7am is an non-stop express that often gets into the city early approx 8:45am

I would suggest an express greyhound (NO Jersey Stops - 6 trips a day) over the SEPTA/NJTransit. Not only do you have to transfer trains, both are sloooooooowwww, too many damn stops, and if Septa is running late, NJT will not wait at all.

Also look at it like this, if the express bus lv Center City at the same time as SEPTA - you'll be to halfway to NYC with the exp bus before SEPTA even gets you to Trenton.

The shortcoming of greyhound is they often oversell their busses and will bump you to the next hour. So the trick is, is to get there plenty early, approx 45-60mins prior.

Greyhound has a new service called bolt bus. That picks up/drops off on 34th street.

www.boltbus.com

It was recently set up to rival the chinatown busses. Sometimes you can get a seat for $1 each way and they have free wi-fi. They also go to DC and boston. I went to Philly last weekend and paid about $7 one way.
