Noted in another thread there was sort of a boom and shaking this morning on UES. Turns out NYC had a "mini" earthquake this morning centered on Roosevelt Island.
What is so hard to believe? Earthquakes do happen once in a blue moon in NYC, in New England, etc. I don't think a strong earthquake would ever hit NYC, but you never know. Maybe it's a once every 1,000 years or something. NYC isn't 1,000 years old yet, so if there was such a thing the last time it happened Manhattan was still green from end to end.
A few months ago I read Manhattan is sinking due to the weight of the skyscrapers (I think parts of Manhattan would be sinking since most of Manhattan actually doesn't has skyscrapers - plenty of high-rises.) I wonder if an earthquake, however weak it is, would impact the sinking, perhaps speed it up?
Earthquakes are not super uncommon in NY. A magnitude 5 hits every 100 years or so. The city is built on bedrock which experiences seismic activity and is relatively unstable. There many faults throughout the state.
Cruella DeVille (hochul) came on and said not to fear, its all part of climate change and that she has a plan to eliminate earthquakes by charging them a toll to enter NYS
