info and assistance and advice please (New York, York: hotel, price, places)

My son, currently in Iraq, has never been to New York city and is planning a road trip with a buddy or two after he gets home..yeah..

They want to stay in New York city for 3-4 days. I dont know where to start in terms of hotel rooms. The rest of the drive up they will "wing" it but I know that is not possible in NYC.

Can you recommend somewhere that a few airmen might stay that isnt too outrageous in price yet near to the places 20 something year olds would want to see?
