So it looks like it will be Obama vs McCain.

Which candidate do you think will bring about changes that would affect NYC and what are some the changes you would like to see?

If Obama got his way, you could kiss NYC good bye. He wants to raise tax rates the "rich" (those making over $200,000) and have unlimited FICO payroll deductions (currently capped at about $100,000). So a self-employed "rich" guy who might have a couple of employees would pay a marginal tax rate of 67%! (40% federal, 7% state, 5% city, 12.4% FICO, 3% medicare).

But I guess that's OK. NYC will go overwhelmingly for Obama because he is a minority, he stands for change (doesn't matter what the change is but it's change) and he makes mesmerizing speeches that make people feel good.

Personally, I will take old and dull McCain anyday over this radical (not liberal, not progressive, not socialist - radical!).

I am McCain fan as well. Many people seem so caught up in the whole "Obama=change" and "McCain=Bush" media stance, they are not taking the time to really understand both candidates. Both want change.

I think McCain's tax cuts for the middle class as well as some of the tax credits to assist w/ health insurance cost should be appealing to middle class new yorkers, as well as his "trade in your mortgage" ideas to assist with people facing for-closures.

I like Obama and find myself drawn to his charismatic public speaking abilities. It's a refreshing change coming from Bush's horrendous and embarrassing comprehension of the English language. Obama will pull many votes on that alone.

New York City is screwed no matter who's President. If we get a Repub, they think, "Oh, they don't vote for us, so we won't direct money their way." If we get a Dem, they think, "Oh, they vote for us no matter what. Let's send the money to the marginal regions."

However, the Republicans are notorious for ignoring issues of interest to urbanites. Democrats ignore them somewhat less. Obama went to college in New York City and spent his adult years in the country's second (actually third) city. McCain is here tonight to leave with hundreds of thousands of New York bucks (fundraiser). He's never lived here. A president intimately familiary with conditions in the nation's cities is in the interest of every city- and close-in suburban resident, the suburbs' economic health dependent as they are on that of their magnet cities.

A few months ago, Obama cited the fact that he and Michelle had only finished paying off their student loans three years ago. This guy is in touch with the lives of ordinary middle-class Americans, more than McCain, who has been a celebrity for over a decade. McCain has qualities I admire -- it's not hard to look good in the wake of W -- but he has a world view I don't share.

I don't think either will do much to help or hurt the city.

I like McCain, even though clearly Obama is going to win in the city by a large margin. I think my politics are usually moderately-conservative like McCain. The only thing that worries me about him are some of his interventionist ideas about foreign policy. (for God's sake lets try not get into any more wars in the near future).

Other than that I'll have no qualms pulling the lever for McCain.

If the Republicans are so pro-business, why haven't they cut self-employment taxes? Small businesses and innovation spur the economy, but no one cares about the little guy or gal.

I can't believe folks want to pay for 100 more years in Iraq by voting for McCain.

You have this reversed. The tax increases both Obama and Clinton are proposing would affect Small Businesses. McCain wants to cut some of the cost of Small Businesses by not increasing taxes, and by cutting the cost of healthcare paid by small business for employees.

I have worked in the past (and currently work for) small businesses and both owners do not want to see Obama or Clinton in office. McCain is not loved by small business owners, but he is the better of the choices. This would be an important issue for NYC I would think, b/c it's the small businesses that make this city unique.

I find McCain okay for the most part. I like that he's a moderate, although he's been pandering to the cons too much of late. The thing that kills him for me is his stance on the war.
