I am having an AC installed, but the super isn't going to do it, the landlord is. They are also painting part of the bathroom. Do I tip the guys that come? Is it custom to tip anyone that comes out to your place to work on something, for example a plumber fixing the sink, or is it just custom to tip the super?

I don't think you need to tip your landlord since he owns your unit/building. Also, I don't think you need to tip a plumber or electrician since you are paying them for their time. I think we tip the super when he helps us out with something that isn't necessarily his responsibility, like installing air conditioning, receiving a package for us, etc.

tipping the super is done because unless he is charging you for the work the tip is his compensation, doing custom installs is not part of his job. If a plumber comes to make a repair he is being paid for that work so unless he does something above and beyond the job he was contracted to do I would say that no tip is required, same for a painter, he's paid to paint a room, if he painted an extra room for you, I would tip him, but if he comes and does the job he was contracted to do, no tip.
As an example, I had a plumber come into to fix a toilet, he works for a large outfit, his company billed me for the repair but as a favor he cleaned every faucet head in my house, no charge, I gave him a tip because he went beyond what he was hired to do.

[quote=mead;4060852]Yeah but why can't she do it herself? Its not such a big deal. Open up the window. Drill the bit into the window sill. Place the A/C unit in the window and close the window.

Now that is subjective and quite judgmental. Have you considered that I may have a terribly large unit, am on a high floor that needs a bracket to be drilled into brick or that I may be in a wheelchair? The question was how much should I tip my super for this, not should I use my super.

Henna, thanks for you insight and great points as usual.
