I think differently. Homicides are less likely to happen to you. I would be more wary of robberies and assaults.
When I'm walking in a bad neighborhood, say like West Harlem, I'm scared of being robbed or jumped. Being murdered doesn't even cross my mind.
I'm hardly ever worried or scared about getting mugged, robbed, or being the victim of any crime for the matter. I'm just not. I just try to keep my wits. But then again I don't loiter by liquor stores, or hang out with the homies at odd hours.
I don't know if you noticed but the robbery numbers were pretty high for a lot "decent" neighborhoods too. So as you can see this whole thing can be very subjective.
IMO homicides are a better gage of how ****y a neighborhood is. But again, its subjective.
This thread coincides with another thread titled "street smarts." To be honest with you, these stats don't mean anything to me. The stats are known to be juked to benefit higher ups.
You can't judge a neighborhood by its stats, that ain't street smart at all.
What I go by is from people who actually live in the neighborhood. I usually don't go to a new neighborhood unless i go there with someone whos from there. And always show respect.
If someone robs you with a weapon or threatens to have a weapon give them everything they want and you won't end up like a statistic.
I don't get my advice from transplants or some numbers.
In terms of raw homicides the top precincts year in and year out are the 75th and 73rd in Brooklyn and the 44th and 46th in the Bronx. These usually have 20 or more yearly. Most of the Bronx precincts fluctuate greatly. The 40th, 42nd, 43rd, 47th, and 52nd have years that they claim murder capital. In Brooklyn, the 79th has bad years. But the top 4, I mentioned above are usually consistent.
I cant believe how low the homicide total in East NY is. I just cant believe it.
