It takes about 20 minutes from the places you mentioned in Queens. I don't know about Jersey City, but now you have half the information, heh.

If you're near a PATH train in Jersey City or Hoboken, you can take it to 23rd & Ave. of the Americas, four blocks west and one block south of school.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - PATH (http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/map.html - broken link)

Plus, the NJ commute cheaper than the Queens commute.

Now you're really confused, right?

Jersey City has 3 stations on the 33rd Street line to Manhattan:

Pavonia-Newport to 23rd Street = 14 minutes
Grove Street to 23rd Street = 17 minutes
Journal Square to 23rd Street = 21 minutes

Pick your price point...

I live in queens (Astoria) at the moment and am moving to Jersey city next week. For you I would def recommend Astoria or Queens over JC. You dont' need a car and at night you can take a cab home and it would be pretty cheap. Although the Path train in JC does run at night frequently, (as do the NYC subways of course) some of the neighborhoods around the stations are not the best. As someone coming from LA and new to NYC, I think you would be happier in Queens. JMHO

How is the commute cheaper? Wouldn't you just buy the monthly MTA card either way?

Yea.. the commute isn't cheaper, because you're going to need to transfer to an MTA run subway anyway...

Yes, they can. You will have to pay the tolls for Jersey and their is no way around that.

PATH is run by a different agency. Does it now accept Metrocard (esp. unlimited Metrocard) as fare?

Quick walk from PATH to school -- much faster than taking three trains, as a subway ride from 23rd would require. No need to transfer, exc in bad weather.

And not everyone uses unlimited cards. If he has classes only four days, it's not necessarily cost effective.
