Maddie, Do a few per diem shifts a month in addition to your work schedule and you will easily make 100K+ a yr.
As a single person or married with no kids, you won't need as much space and can probably get a decent apt. Often times what happens is that as RN's get older and have kids, they end up moving to the 'burbs where they can buy a home. Eventually they get sick of the commute and just work from a suburban hospital. MANY RN's in the suburban hospitals once worked in the city when they were younger.
I have yet to meet a nurse in NYC who was struggling to make it. All seem to be living a comfortable middle to upper middle class lifestyle. It's a tough job, only certain people have the makeup for it. The best ones have a way with people and the patience of a saint. Good career.
I'm an RN. I work for a state facility and I make in the low 60's. Not good $, but I get great bennies and a pension and I don't break my back like I did when I worked "The Floor". I still work per diem in a nursing facility in Jamaica Qns on a Vent unit. I use to make good money working there when I was F/T ($72,000) starting salary and shift diff. My first year as an RN I made in the High 80's (With OT of course). But, I worked like an animal and the bennies were horrible. I rather make less pay and not break my back. I've literally seen coworkers pass out on the floor due to being overworked and stressed. You can make in NYC on a nurse salary with doing OT.

How long have you been a nurse here in NYC and how long have you live in your current place here in NYC. by yourself or roommates?

Im assuming you're in a roommate situation.
I've been an RN for 2 1/2 years, I was an LPN for 8 years. I'm living with my wife and son, and we have another son on the way. You can definitely live in NYC on an RN salary, just not in a trendy neighborhood (unless you have roommates)
. Just about all my coworkers and I live in the Greater Jamaica area. It's a sea of individuals in scrubs when you go by the downtown transit hub in Jamaica during rush hour.
