I'm moving July 4th from Vancouver, Canada to Brooklyn (Fort Greene), and was wondering if you could recommend the best sites/ways to reach potential employers. I've been finding the methods I've been using (Monster, CareerBuilder) aren't giving me any response. Granted, maybe it has to do with my resume, but here in Vancouver, my resume would be considered strong - I'm a very experienced Media Strategist with various industry experience, including real estate, fashion, agency & retail and have both bought and flogged various mediums. Any good places to network?

A BIG flaw, which I know is possibly hurting me, is that I don't have a degree. BUT, my 17 years of experience (I'm a 39 year old workaholic divorced female) has allowed me to have an income of $80000/year here, which I've been told equates to about 45-55% more in NYC. (Not sure if THAT'S true...would be nice though, considering my rent is $3k) IF I can find a way to get in the door. I'm more than happy to "work my way up" again...being a different country and all (and yes, I can work in the US - I'm a dual citizen)...

Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated!

Am I acting like a Neanderthal if I suggest the New York Times classified ads?

Craigslist would be the best. Why would you give up 80k to come here? The job market in NYC is going DOWN lately as well. Please reconsider.

If you're not a US citizen or don't have appropriate documentation/visa allowing you to work, you can't work here legally.

If it is Media and Marketing try Media Bistro. But CL yeilds a good response from small boutiques which cannot afford head dhunters.

Might be one of the reasons she's not getting responses though. I've not used Monster or Careerbuilder - does anyone know how you go about making it clear you have legal status in the U.S. when you submit applications?

Best idea is to think up a list of like 20 employers you would like to work for and research from there. Call them, inquire, mail/fax a resume. Much more personable. Those craigslist ads get hundreds of responses. You might be better suited for a job and not even know.
