Is Bushwick in Brooklyn a safe area? Is there shopping and restaurants conveniently located? Am looking at an apt. one block from the J Train and a short walk to the L. What age group lives in that area? Thanks for any help. Have to be there in two weeks.

I do not feel safe in Bushwick and the public services (ie hospitals) are awful.

From a social workers perspective, nope, not safe. What were you looking to spend on rent?

I have been live here for 15 years , this place change a lot, very clean L train, busy street, just need more formal restaurant, but a lot of fast food, rent not too high, near Halsey L train stop is not a bad area.

I personally would not feel safe anywhere in that area and have been to a few spots by now

I agree with all of the above, but would like to add, for what it's worth, that many of the young, the broke and the possibly stupid have moved there lately, and have (for the most part) been fine. I do know personally of one pretty brutal mugging with a baseball bat occurring out there, which was enough to keep me from ever wanting to live there, but that's anecdotal.

I lived there as a 20 year old white female around 2000 and had no issues whatsoever, I have two friends who live there without issue as well.

It depends on the exact area, and your level of street smarts.

That video pretty much says it all on how the neighborhood feels about gentrification and says how the hipsters should feel on moving into the area...

Hart street, can anybody tell us if this is an ok area? We are planning on spending the summer in New York and have found a really nice place but unsure about what the area is like. Have heard mixed reviews.
