Hi,

I am considering whether I should proceed with a job in Hackensack, NJ. I am currently living in Brooklyn by Parkside Ave subway and was wondering if anyone knows how long it would take me to drive to Hackensack NJ during rush hour. MapQuest says 40 minutes but I do not believe it!

They may do flex hours, for example 8-4. Will I be stuck in traffic most of the time? I do not want to drive more than 45 minutes to work each day.

Looking at the train schedules it looks like this is not a realistic option.

Is it worth my while to proceed or will the commute drive me crazy?

Thank you!

From Parkside Avenue to Manhattan by car could easily run to 30 minutes during rush hour. And then you'd be trying to get across that island!

Thank you Fred, what about at 7 AM? They are offering flex hours. Any better?

I will then have to get home around 3 PM.

Smile public transportation

I think you're better off with the subway to the PATH... that would be faster and cheaper ultimately than a car, with gas prices the way they are. Then you don't have to worry about rush hour traffic.

there is a NJ Transit train that goes to downtown Hackensack

but by car you are going reverse

all the cars are coming in from NJ to Manhattan so once in Manhattan, getting out should not be a problem, but getting to Manhattan from Brooklyn is still gonna be bad

7AM would still put you on the road during rush hour. In fact, pretty much right in the middle of rush hour. Your best bet is, indeed, the subway to PATH. (From Parkside Avenue you could catch the Q train to 34 Street, and transfer to PATH there).

FYI, the first train to Hackensack from Hoboken Terminal leaves at around 9. Definitely not doable by train if the OP has to arrive at 8.

NJ Transit buses that do arrive at Hackensack before 8 are the following:

From the Port Authority:

Route(s) 144/164: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T1148.pdf

163: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T1162.pdf

165: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0165.pdf

From the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal:

178: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0178.pdf

182: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0182.pdf

Just find out what route stops the closest to your location and you're good to go.

Doesn't the PATH train also stop at Atlantic/Pacific? Parkside to Atlantic is only a few stops.

No PATH at Atlantic/Pacific, that is the LIRR.
