NYC -- Just curious if anyone can tell me how quickly you could go and grab a $20/hour temp/contract job in the city while looking for something more permanent with benefits/401k/etc.
In Seattle, there are IT shops you can work at as a temp and make an easy $20 per hour while in between jobs. Do they exist in NYC? Will $20 per hour leave much left over for bills and stuff? What's considered middle-class and doing "ok" for 20-somethings in NYC?
I would think you could find a temp job. Having some work experience will greatly help though. Have you looked on Craig's list or Monster, I would start there.
There is always a need for contract programmers - and I think they make considerably more than $20/hour - which is only the equivalent of $40K - not a "middle class" salary in NYC.
There are also several companies that specialize in placing contract programmers on assignments, as well a permanent placements as well.
Dice.com could probably point you to some of the local contract placement agencies.
You'll likely land a permanent position pretty quickly. Programmers are in demand these days!
