I'm considering the possibility of moving to New York City, but DO NOT want to take up residence in Manhattan. I was looking at Brooklyn and am planning a trip there and would like to know:

1. Is Brooklyn still as bad as it was in the 70s and 80s?
2. Where are the worst areas? I've read about Bed Stuy(?) and East New York(?) and Coney Island as being rough. What are the better areas?
3. What hotels or areas do you recommend staying in for an overall representation of Brooklyn?

Thanks..

No, Brooklyn today definitely isn't Brooklyn of the 1970s. And there's no such thing as an "overall representation" of Brooklyn (or any of the five boroughs, for that matter). People can tell you about their neighborhoods, but you really have to come here and see things for yourself.

Bad wording on my part, I mean just a decent, affordable place to stay. I'm just trying to feel out the area.

I understand that there really isn't a proper representation since SO many different ppl reside in the area. Sorry.

Brooklyn is very large and many areas are very different. How much you want to spend on rent will partly dictate where you can afford to live. Several areas in southern Brookyln are a good mix of cheap and safe
