My very, very old Dell computer with a very, very old Word Perfect program crashed disastrously, and I'm trying to coax it back to life. The current repair guy is running out of options, and I don't know how to determine if there's someone around with other options. By any chance, does anyone know a brilliant computer repair person in NYC (preferably Manhattan) or - worst case - data recovery?
Just a basic help for you. I'm a do-it-yourself repair. Is it a desktop computer? or a laptop? Some old programs can be found in the internet no matter how old they are. In backing up your precious data, you can use other's computer to back it up for you using a hard-disc-to-disc option. Their might be something wrong with your Dell Computer why it crashed disastrously. After backing it up, it you still want to use your old hard drive, try to SCAN for bad sector or virus.
Thanks, Dukowski. It's a desktop, and the latest news is that the problem seems to be the hard drive controller. I haven't talked to the computer whiz yet today, but the implication of his message was that the HD itself it all right, and if we could find a replacement for the controller, I might not have to bankrupt myself with data recovery. Do you know any place that specializes in very old parts - which I guess could be by mail, so not necessarily in NYC?
If your hard drive is fine, you don't need to pay anyone for "expensive" data recovery unless you just feel like giving money away for nothing. You can simply add your hard drive as a slave to any running machine, retrieve your data, and burn them to DVDs. Older parts can get VERY VERY expensive -if you can find them that is. Your "whiz kid" should be able to do this for you since the process is quite trivial.
