My wife and I live in Bedford Park as well, and are often on the other side of Mosholu to run errands. We like it here. Don't think you'll feel unsafe. Like Luchador said, it's pretty bustling. Perhaps late night would be a different story. But yeah, there's not that many restaurants. Little Italy is probably your best bet, although there are a couple of Mexican places (on Webster and Bedford Park Blvd.), and a Korean place on 204th. Another poster mentioned a Vietnamese rest. relatively close by, but I'd have to search through the old threads to find the location.
There's supposedly a farmer's market in the NYBG on Wed., and another one somewhere in Norwood. Lots of open space here. Lehman College Center for the Performing Arts has some interesting shows throughout the year. We love the main library by Fordham although it would be a bit of a hike for you.
Norwood, Bronx seems OK. It's not as bad as areas around Bedford Park Blvd. but it has its moments. Around the subway station and around the Metro-North station seems Not Great but OK

Thanks BXgear: I was wondering what a walk to the Metro-North train would be like. What the surrounding roads I would walk on to get there... I will be coming from Montefiore. It looks like a 15 minute walk on Google Maps... does that sound about right?

Probably. It would be 10-15 downhill walk to Williamsbridge MNRR station on Gun Hill/Webster. Just be careful as there are many cars heading to/from the Bronx River to go to Norwood and Co-op City.
In my mind, the only unsafe part of Norwood is that near Tracey Towers and Clinton High School. But when it comes to shopping, the Jerome-Gun Hill district is not too shabby.

I read that the hospital has worked with the Police to put surveillance camera on Jerome at no cost to the store owners. Good to know it's safe to shop there as I will be close.
I lived in Norwood in the mid-to-late 80s. I still have friends in the neighborhood. They tell me that it's changed some, but never really got bad like alot of areas. I relocated to another area (Springfield, Massachusetts). Just be on your guard and take notice of your surroundings. I did this in Norwood back in the 80s, and I still do it in Springfield, which can be a dangerous city at times. If I hadn't made a new life here, I'd move back to Norwood in a split-second. BTW - I'm a 44 year-old white guy, if that means anything. Just use common sense, and you'll be fine.
