Many cities and regions went with light rail only because they never had subways in the first place. Light rail isn't necessarily the way to go, although it is less expensive to construct than a subway (or "heavy rail").
Of the current proposals for light rail lines within New York City, the one I'd like to see most is a line using the old freight cut that slices across Brooklyn. There would be quite a few connections to existing subway lines. Also the proposed light rail line to replace the Gowanus Expressway.

Like eastern Queens. It would be to replace feeder bus routes that were originally supposed to be subway routes or became one once a portion of the subway route was demolished. Many of those bus routes happen to travel on wide enough lanes to accommodate a light rail route.

Full bus does not equal full subway. A subway from Whitestone to Jamaica via Franny Lou is not needed and would be a waste of tax dollars. This bus is only packed when the kids are getting out of Holy Cross and St. Francis Prep. This train would be the Catholic High School express and would be a good place to be alone with your thoughts outside of those hours.
The only north/south line that may be needed would run from LGA to Main/Roosevelt Flushing to Jamaica possibly all the way to JFK. This would be a vital connection.
I rarely ever see the G train!!!I'm close to the RVG line in Astoria, and I have seen the G train ONCE or TWICE!!!
It's only a matter of time until it's cutback "officially" to Court Square 24/7, something that it has been doing forever because of "track improvements".
well it would be a good idea to make a train from the bronx into queens they have trains from Q - BR Q-M But no Q - BX it would be wise the Q44 from main street flushing through whitestone and into the bronx is always i mean ALWAYS crowded never find an empty Q44 bus light rail would be a smart idea since making heavy rail is very expensive a train going through franny lue would be smart from the bronx going through whitestone then through northerneastern queens less cars more transit. save the environment people this part of the city every uses cars its disgusting
In fact, MTA wants to cut back the G from Continental to Court Square. The level of ridership is just high enough so that they can't justify it...yet. (There are plans to extend the V line into Brooklyn--which would certainly be a good idea. When that happens, you can expect the G to be officially terminating at Court Square). Incidentally, wait until those outlandish new condominiums planned for the Greenpoint waterfront are built. The G line will then have full length trains restored to it!
As to the Bronx-to-Queens route...that was proposed many years ago. That's why the Whitestone Bridge was constructed to facilitate a transit line. You can thank Robert Moses (or his memory) for making sure such a line was never initiated. Although, given the construction of the bridge, it could be. If our wonderful representatives in city government had enough guts to push for it.
