Indeed, it would have been pretty rough over there, that's for sure. I do believe that at one point, lore puts a speakeasy being operated there during prohibition. And, given the general condition of the Hudson River banks at the time of its creation, it would have been a rougher, industrial crowd in the general Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. The Tavern is a survivor.
46th street and 8th Avenue for years and years was an awful corner, imagine how it was 3 avenues to the west on 11th! I shudder thinking having to walk around there late at night back then
one guy who briefly posted here a few months ago told me how his grandfather was a victim of an attempted mugging in broad daylight with his son present on 47th street between 8th and 9th back in the early 80's
it's odd because i walk that block often and I've never seen anyone bad over there
