Can anyone give me some insight on unions in NYC? Specifically Electrical workers? We are thinking of relocating in the near future to NYC or Seattle (fall 2009) and both are union states. I am not too worried about employment since I am an office mgr. but my fiance is an electrician's apprentice here in Orlando.
Florida is a right to work state so we are both clueless about unions. I have read some things online that seem to suggest he would have a very difficult time getting a similiar apprenticeship type job in NYC, not sure about Seattle. Also is there a waiting list to get into the union in NYC? We are not looking to live in NYC permanently so lengthy waiting lists are not practical for him.
How does all this work?
Down here in FLA, you go to work for a company and they send you to a trade school (if you want to go) on their dime and you have to be employed by a participating employer of the apprenticeship program to go to the school.
the nyc electrician union is local 3. i know electricians in that union are required to go to school for 5 years i think like once or twice a week. as far as getting in the union i guess u gotta know someone or have a company that can talk to the union to put u in..
