If you want tall buildings you need big time infrastructure. If you zoned ultra high density everywhere it would overload the streets, subways, sewage/water, schools, .....

All those cities that do have the high rises? Not one of them would I use as an example to model after.

I thought Chicago has been widely praised for its urban design and architecture?

There are far more 600+ tall condominium buildings in NYC than any other city in the US, they're all just high-end and expensive to most. I could only find 5 in Chicago. The only city that out-does NYC when it comes to this is Hong Kong and Dubai. Here are some I found standing and under construction-

Trump World Tower, United Nations (Tallest in the US,)

30 Park Place/99 Church Street (Which is nearly 1,000ft and will be taller than Trump)

53 West 53rd -1300ft (which will be taller than both)

One Madison Avenue -900+ ft

Beekman Tower - 900ft

80 South Street -1000

56 Leonard - 800ft

Barclay Tower

731 Lexington Avenue

One Madison Park

Central Park Place

Melife Tower (1 Madison Avenue) which is being converted into Versace designed condos.

Trump Palace Condominiums

425 5th Avenue

360 10th Av

250 E. 57th ST

50 West Street

10 West End Avenue

125 West 31st Street

Nobu Residences (45 Broad St)

W New York residences downtown (123 Washington)

Atelier II-

440 West 42nd Street

131-139 W 45th St

Riverplace II

605 West 42nd St

Platinum -858 West 50th

The Helena

The Orion

Trump Place Riverside, Upper West Side

wow! that's quite a list. for some reason, when i visited chicago, it felt like the city was full of really attractive high-rise luxury condos.

why do you think NYC condos are so much more expensive than Chicago? they're both big world-class cities.

Maybe because Chicago's skyline is smaller. Because of NYC's height and density, they blend in more in NYC and stick out more in Chicago so the high rise construction in Chicago is easier to notice.

NYC's is far more expensive because NYC is more desirable and contains much more domestic wealth and international money pouring in than any other city in the country. International money is one of the things driving NYC to new heights. In comparison, the median price of a luxury condominium in Manhattan is $6,360,000 and in around $400,377 in Chicago. The average price for a normal apartment in Manhattan is $1,800,000 and $224,562 in Chicago.

Actually it's not quite that high in Manhattan: Average sale price of a Manhattan apartment is $1.67 million - Jul. 2, 2008

the median number seems way too high. how are you defining luxury condo? 6 milion just seems like a really high figure for a median.

It's correct, $6,364,000.

The luxury market = upper 10% of sales in Manhattan.

And, we are not even talking about the Penthouses in SoHo that rock out for upwards of 35,000, 40,000 and in some cases, 75,000 a month.

According to the x40 rule - You need to make over 1,400,000. Hahaaa.
