One more thing: Is this considered Harlem? Morningside Heights? or UWS? or all three, it seems to be confusing....

...is it considered a safe area for a single white professional woman?

I've lived in this area for a couple weeks. So I don't feel comfortable commenting on safety yet, but it's definitely Harlem. Morningside Heights might be just a couple blocks away but that steep, steep climb up the park makes it feel a lot farther than it is.

Before you rent there, definitely check out the area at night to make sure you're comfortable there. It really transforms. There will be a ton of people just hanging out outside, sitting on stoops, playing music etc. Nothing threatening really, but just something that can be jarring for someone not used to that. 116th St (i.e. Little Senegal) is a bit louder I think, but I'm sure 115th is comparable.

Good luck in your search.

These days the area seems to be safe with all the gentrification going on, but I still be careful. Lot of professionals both black and white that are moving up there, especially the area you are looking at. Lot of new construction going on.

It is Harlem and yes it is fairly safe, but there is drug and gang activity in the neighborhood. it is 1 block from the B AND C train, 3 blocks (two of them fairly long) from the 2 and 3 train so you won't have to walk the streets too long at night if the neighborhood feels too sketchy. I think you will be absolutely fine though.

I am the same (young, white female professional) thinking about a similar move though probably above 116th street. It sounds like it is pretty safe, just depends on your comfort level with people loitering, etc.
