i would say that intervale avenue south of east 163rd street is better than intervale avenue north of east 163rd street. intervale avenue and fox street is south of east 163rd. just regular houses over there. 163rd looks ghetto to me and last time i was around there (march of this year) there was a lot of police activity, not necessarily a good thing.

There is ALOT of police activity there...and although the area is changing, with alot of new housing coming online...it really depends on your comfort level. Why do you ask?

When my parents separated my pops moved to Rodgers Place over by Intervale Ave, I remember going to visit my pops and seeing 40's laying upright in the street, rats the size of cats, and needles during the height of the crack epidemic. It didn't phase me much, but I knew it was a bad area, I'd see blood stains on the street corners from time to time, a lot of the most violent crimes I can remember as a child happened in and around the Intervale area. Now they are building a lot of new housing, but it will take some time to improve the area

A friend of mine is considering moving there. She is a 23-year-old school teacher who must commute between E Harlem and Lehman College on a daily basis. The housing in question is new and, from what she tells me, beautiful (for the Bronx, anyway). I was wondering if this would be a suitable place to live.

Thanks for your input! I truly appreciate it.

I agree with you on this one. The area north of 163rd (East Morrisania) is worse than parts south of it (Longwood).

I would definitely have her walk around the area, as that is really the only way to get a feel for it and only then can she determine her comfort level. Alot of the new housing going up is quite nice, and the area has improved dramatically...

Thanks for the advice. She's walked around the area and deems it satisfactory, but then again, she isn't extremely streetwise. That is why I decided to ask you guys.

well when you put it that way, a person with street smarts wouldnt have a problem walking on that block.
