Unfortunately in NYC that income is considered decent only - not mediocre, but nothing that will put you on America's Rich and Famous TV shows.

My friend works in NYC and lives in NJ with this wife. Earns 70k wife does not work.

Lives ok. No reason why you cant do it

Nothing flash about his lifestyle tho. You can burn 200k easy if you wanted to. Comes down to your lifestyle.

The same can of Campbell soup or cat food would have 4 different prices in the stores that are on the same block. If you're generally smart and efficient with money, with no financial burden and debt, don't have habits of buying $2000 Prada bag every month, you can live quite comfortably with 130K in NY, you don't need to have roommates, believe me.
Agreed. NYC is a VERY expensive city but with 130k and no kids you should do very well in the city. Like Carla stated become familiar with the stores so you can get the best deals when you can and also consider living in the outer boroughs.

130k! He can shop and live just about anywhere. Summer rental in Long Island or New Jersey too.

I make around 58,000 and I still have a lot of money leftover at the end of each paycheck, even after paying some bills and 2 student loans off. I manage to save nearly half that I make. I just don't live an extravagant lifestyle.

No, that's not realistic. About one third of that salary will go to taxes. And if there's a rental in NJ (LI is WAY too expensive, for the most part), they'll want a car - which will run about $8000/year including a garage, if they choose to live in Manhattan.
