Just as an outline, you will be working around the dregs of society for many hours per day. I've known a few CO's, and they don't have very favorable views of humanity. Find a forum where police and Co's post and ask them honestly about the job.
So, it's a solid job for a person of limited education in terms of pay, benefits, and pension, but in terms of the work..that decision you need to look long and hard at.
What kind of things are you hearing? There were a few threads in the past here about corrections. Look them up.
Its a tough job. Also a lot of people seem to think they are dirty (read corrupt) or unprofessional. I'm sure like any other city job, there are pros and cons.
It's mostly has to do with CO to CO relationships in the jails. Not being a team player and looking out for each other, older COs making use of rookie COs(happens in all LE, so don't know what's the difference), etc...

There was a thread on here about corrections once and I asked a question to one of the posters who happened to be former NYPD or active, don't exactly recall. Anyway I happened to ask him why there seemed to be resentment from NYPD towards corrections, and the reason he gave was pretty lame. Racist too. Maybe jealousy over pay was involved also. Who knows.

If things haven't changed, most of the correction rookies get caught working double shifts. It is usually on their first day back from their regular day off (RDO) and on their last day before their RDO. It's a P.I.T.A. but there is some money to be made. Don't know how this fits in if your a family man.
Just remember, corrections is a paramilitary organization. If you enjoyed a BBQ this past Labor Day holiday, you can pretty much kiss the next one goodbye along with the other holidays.
