The closest Walmart I think (well at least closest to Queens) would be the one in Valley Stream (Long Island) in the Green Acres Mall
Bingo.
Actually, because that mall is such an integral part of southeastern Queens life, many people living in Queens don't even realize it's not technically in Queens, haha. Valley stream is barely into LI.
so me and my girl are thinking of moving to new york city and was wondering where are ideal locations for a couple to live, I'll prolly be workign at wal-mart since i'm with them already and you can transfer to other stores that way i would have a job when i get there and i don't know what my girl will be doing but i know she'll get a job too, so just wondering. also what are 1 bedrooms usually running for there, and if you live in NYC do you really need a car cause if not i'll prolly sell mine, also does anyone know what on stockers at walmart make there? thanks a bunch, umm if it helps at all me and my girl both like plays so we don't want to be a million miles away from broadway and also we don't want to be in the ghetto. thanks again.
Gosh, first Boston, then Seattle, now NYC? Moving to Queens/Long Island to stock at the only Walmart in the NYC area is not going to work out well for you. It's way too expensive here, and salaries for unskilled workers aren't going to be any better than in Texas. Besides, I think that area in Queens looks just like areas of Oklahoma that I've been to, it's definitely not Manhattan.
Why don't you move to one of the larger cities in Texas? You can transfer to a Walmart in Dallas or Houston, enroll in school studying anything but a liberal arts degree, and then search for a job in another city once you graduate and have better earning potential. Do you have any family in one of these cities? It's always better to move somewhere that you have family connections.
You will not live near broadway..unless it's broadway in Queens.
Well, now, they could find a place on Broadway, the same Broadway as Manhattan, though it would be Yonkers. It would be difficult to live on that salary, I agree, since NYC is one of the most expensive in the world. And, living in the suburbs, your transportation costs are higher, since you don't have the benefit of an unlimited Metro card for the subway and city bus, express bus extra. Now, if you're working in White Plains and keep a car, you could live in Yonkers, and be somewhat close to the city, though parts of it are a little sketchy and Yonkers, like NYC, has extra taxes.
For plays and shows, you can get half price tickets to shows, day of, at the TKTS booths, so that can be a savings. There are some off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway/experimental shows that can also entertain at decent prices.
If I were looking to spend the amount you'd like to spend, under say $1400, I would seriously consider looking at Peekskill, Ossining, or the aforementioned Yonkers in Westchester County. Peekskill is the furthest from White Plains at about 26 miles, Ossining is about 14 miles, and Yonkers is about 14 miles, but Yonkers is the closest to NYC and parts of it are near the border, allowing you to use the city's subway system with Westchester buses that interconnect should you be a couple with one White Plains job and one job in the city.
Another consideration closer to White Plains would be Port Chester, New Rochelle, or parts of Mount Vernon. Like Yonkers, Port Chester has good and bad areas, as does Mount Vernon, so you need to be careful of the individual neighborhood. You can likely find that budget in Port Chester in a multi-family home or New Rochelle. Port Chester is about 7 miles from White Plains, New Rochelle is about 10, and Mount Vernon is 12. I would say that this is the lower end for the decent areas in this area of the county, hence the recommendation to look in the northwestern areas for more selection of better apartments than you'd be likely to find that close to White Plains.
It could be done, but you'd need to prepare for a realistic budget and apartment size. If you can transfer your job, that's a great plus, since you would not have to seek another position once in the NYC area.
Dude Queens looks NOTHING like Oklahoma lol.
I agree...try Dallas or Houston..I've actually heard they are doing better than a lot of cities as far as the job economy goes. Personally, I have family in Houston, and if my man wasn't at Fordham University I would move to Houston for a while to finish my college degree.
i don't live in texas anymore, my mum lives in wyoming so i came up here to make some money and thats where i'm at, my choice is seattle but my girl wants new york and well she means alot to me so trying to figure it all out, new york does seem uber expensive and walmart prolly isn't the best job to transfer to nyc with other than that i appreciate all the help about the places that would be considerable to live at, though it may have to wait.

Are you serious?
Unless your last name is Walton, a job at Walmart isn't going to cut it in NYC or Seattle. Maybe the outskirts of Seattle.
p.s. Moving to NYC just because your girlfriend wants to move here is plain silly. Most men at least wait until divorce to get bankrupted by their women.
Why does your girl what to live in NY? you will be so borke-she wont have money to shop and have fun, both of you will be working 2 jobs just to survive and pay the bills, and you will live in a very crappy appartment far-far away from Manhattan.

Yes please tell him the truth Ace Rock.
Epidemia you cannot make it on a Walmart salary in NYC. Most people in NYC are having a hard time making it with 40-60k a year, even people making in the 100k range are complaining about the expenses here.
Please come and visit and enjoy our city, but don't move here unless you are making well over 150k. It won't be worth it otherwise. Don't believe the hype.
