I remember missing an election right after I moved to the city even though I had registered. Not may people vote in primaries so if there is a contested race in your area your vote has a HUGE HUGE impact.

Find out who's running in your area here: New York County, NY: Smart Voter

If you live Downtown I'd suggest voting for: Paul Newell for State Assembly. But don't take my word for it do your own research.
