^ MTA has somehow managed to get its exams removed from the DCAS system, so the best place to check would probably be their official website. (Don't put 100% of your faith in that list number; there are always lots of people who turn down the call when it comes, so in practice you'll find that you move up a lot faster than you might've thought).
Good luck! The posting/hands on really gets you learning stuff, but seriously, stick to what school car taught you.
Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I don't want to pick up bad habits especially before my practical. I took the written midterm today and I only got one wrong. The one I got wrong wad for not putting all of the above. Lol. Tomorrow is the practical.
Had a small scare tonight on the job at Hewes Street. After I closed down the doors of the train, and it started pulling out of the station, some guy that was walking along the platform started making like he was going to jump onto the side and attempt to ride on the outside of the car. He actually grabbed the top of the outside of the door and was clinging to it for a couple of seconds. Luckily a few "stop, stop, STOP!"s got him to stop. He was clearly drunk, but walking with a girl, who hopefully escorted him out of the station.
GEEZ! What the heck is wrong with the TENS site? Every time I try to log in, it takes me to that stupid Novell page instead of the home page. %$#^& I just want to print out my schedule card!

I gave up on TENS a long time ago. I could never get what I wanted from it.
About your story at Hewes Street: a conductor I know was working on the N line. At Kings Highway, some guy came running down the stairs--AFTER he had the doors closed and the train started moving--and ran face-first into the train. It spun him around and threw him across the platform.
Some kind of idiot, you might think. MTA took my friend out of service and attempted to "discipline" him...although the stupid person's actions were completely beyond his control. The lesson is: always be alert. We work for a company that will try to blame you in any and every instance.
Fred, would you happen to know if there are any competitive exams for conductors or station agents coming up in 2012? I checked the listings on MTA's website and right now they do not have anything beyond December of this year, but I figured you or someone else here might have inside information given your proximity to the "sources". I am seriously regretting not applying back in 2008 because I was in school (wasting time) and I just cant wait for new opportunities.
Also, is there a time limit on the exams for conductors, operators and etc. ? Does it require any prior specific knowledge or is it a general aptitude test?
The exam for conductor is so simple, you'll walk away feeling vaguely like your intelligence has been insulted. Really. Most of it is judgement calls, ethical calls, and how you would respond to customers. It is NOT difficult for anyone of even average intelligence to do well.
So in other words exam takers can take as long as they want to complete those questions?
And congratulations with your appointment - you are very lucky!

If I'm reading your question right, no. They give you 2.5 hrs to complete an 80 question multiple choice exam.
