Look how tough it is to get in with the Sanitation Dept union here in NYC. I dont think that being a garbage man is considered a glamorous job by anyone. Still tough to get though. Good pay and good benefits is what makes it hard. Some people with degree's might even thumb their noses at them. But come payday, the garbage man might be the one thumbing his nose.
I'm a Sanitation worker and I laugh every pay day ,I laugh at all those people who looked down on us because this Sanitation worker makes double what most of them do and all I do is take out the trash LOL.But all in all it is hard to get this job you got to have luck on your side..
P.S What do you mean I don't look Glamorous LOL

Hey OFFWING, alot of people who went to, and graduated from good colleges would be surprised at what some of us blue collar guys paychecks look like. We could easily go home, get cleaned up, go to the bar and pose as 'yuppies' if we wanted to. I mean some of us make as much or more than some of them. Im really talking about them 'wanna be yuppies' though. Not the high society types. Cause in the big scheme of things, our paychecks are still CHUMP CHANGE.

It's so true when I first started to date my wife she was shocked at how much I made .She has a white collar job and she tells me how much some of those people make and I just smile .I also smile because Im home taking a nap at 2 in the afternoon while she still at work for another couple of hours LOL.But once again I'll say it is hard to get these jobs my father is a retired Stone & derrick men (IRONWORKER) and he got real lucky through out his career he didn't get layed off to much in the winter months .I remember when i was younger he would always try to get me in when they opened the books but I was reluctant because I dont like heights .So I'll just keep my feet on the ground

Believe me, you got a better job. Some guys (including myself) enjoy being layed off! More time to pound CORONA'S ! LOL. Your job aint easy by no means. But over all, your body Ironworking would've taken alot more of a beating. Plus, you probably dont have some idiot breathing down your neck every second of the day. Like alot of them 'bird dogging' Ironworker foremens do.

I've never heard anyone laughing at a sanitation worker. We KNOW how much you make. Thanks for not whining and complaining like every other city union member!

There are educated (yuppies) types, who do look down on that job and the workers. "Whining and complaining like EVERY other city union member"? You sound ant-union to me. How do you know that their 'gripes' and 'beefs' they have aint without merit? You every strap a pair of WORK BOOTS on? Until you've walked in their shoes by doing that job, dont judge. Cause more than likely you dont have a clue what them workers are dealing with on a daily basis. And it just makes you sound jealous and envious of their pay and benefits.

Yeah I've seen first hand the beating your bodys take first hand .My dad stayed pretty healthy his whole time on the job .He would come home take a nap then work out for 2 hours to stay in shape. Now my Grandfather thats a different story he was always getting hurt broken feet legs or hands every time I saw him he had some kind of cast on Same as the other guys from there job always getting hurt .Now im not saying I have it easy we get hurt alot, lots of cuts on our legs and hands from people put glass in black bags and you just grab the bag next thing you have all this blood all over you ,not cool at all.As for someone breathing down your neck they are starting to put G.P.S in the trucks so Big Brother can watch you all the time.

Besides the getting hurt part (which happens alot), I was really refering to the 'wear and tear' over the long haul. My old man always kept himself in good shape too. Alot of guys are pretty beat up by the time they retire. Or have alot more aches and pains compared to other guys their age that are in similiar 'good shape' but had office jobs or work that wasn't as physical. Also a 'G.P.S' cant scream or stare at you! LOL Human precence feels alot different.

True, I'm feeling a little anti-union at the moment. (my husband is in one and would rather not be) But I was sincere about not hearing sanitation workers doing a lot of complaining about what they're not getting. You were talking about how good you have it and it's refreshing to hear. And I've always preferred a guy in work boots to one who wears a suit every day. Sorry to offend!
