Have you looked at the local NYC union websites? It's not so easy to get into most of the unions anymore. Most require they go thru the apprenticeship programs and those are tough to get into. Apprenticeship Opportunities - New York State Department of Labor

My suggestion he look for work with a company/institution that is unionized and go from there. Union Jobs Clearinghouse : New York

There are many unions in NYC for tour kid to join. The first thing is you need to look out the right union for you such as a construction union is one of them. Then there are two ways to join it, a membership of union or grabbing apprenticeship opportunities.

Look how tough it is to get in with the Sanitation Dept union here in NYC. I dont think that being a garbage man is considered a glamorous job by anyone. Still tough to get though. Good pay and good benefits is what makes it hard. Some people with degree's might even thumb their noses at them. But come payday, the garbage man might be the one thumbing his nose.
Only the low level office jobs (read clerks and secretaries).

Professionals have unions (teachers for example) and it certainly isn't easy to get into the teachers union. You ultimately need a masters degree and a teaching license. In NYC teachers or professors often hold other jobs as well. Of course our work isn't dangerous.

Social workers have their own unions.
