I walked that area last year late at night and it seemed completely fine, but I was just reading an older post here on these boards that said 8th ave in the 40s at night is shaky. Thats ONE block away from where we will be.

What's the real deal? Wife and I are staying there this weekend. Thanks!

it is perfectly fine. back in the '80s that was a really smutty area of manhattan with a plethora of xxx-rated video stores, prostitutes and the like, but the area has changed now. there may be a remnant or 2 left over, but nothing to worry about.

I second that. It's fine. Have fun. Be smart (don't walk around by yourself at 3am). Use common sense and enjoy.

There's also an awesome place on 9th and I think 47th. I think it's Greek. It's a good date place. Really cute. They have lots of dips and spreads and good fondue. Wish I could remember the name.

Thanks guy. Like I said, it seemed perfectly fine when I was there last year, even at 1 am. Just reading a few posts made me re-think it.

We're gonna have a good time

I used to live on 47th between Ninth and Tenth and never had a problem. It get's nicer, and a little safer, the further north you go. The Port Authority bus terminal (42nd between Eighth and Ninth) should be avoided if possible. It's not that dangerous, but still rather seedy.

Here's a tip: If you're taking the subway, take the N, R, or W to the 49th Street station. If you get out at the south end of the station you'll be on 47th Street. It's far, far less crowded than the 42nd Street station (which is pretty much a zoo at all hours).

Have fun. I miss living in Hell's Kitchen. It's so convenient.

People always say the bus terminal is seedy, but I've never understood this.. I go there quite frequently, at different times of day and night, and I've never seen anything unusual!

There's a certain element still around somewhat. There's a bit of a drug addict/hooker/smutty/methadone clinic element still there. You have to realize that this area used to be really sleazy at one point. Its not really like that anymore but there are still remnants. Your gonna see some things, but is it unsafe? IMO, no, not really.

Have you ever walked on Ninth between 42nd and 41st? I think there's a homeless shelter or some similar facility there. There are usually a dozen or so people camped (literally) on the sidewalk. It's a block or two of the old, 1980s, New York. I've never been harassed there, but I would certainly call it seedy.
