I will eat pretzels from street carts and have never had an issue with getting sick from one, though that would be difficult to do with a pretzel in the first place. Some people I know will eat hot dogs from vendors, especially those that they have gotten to know, and some vendors have small crowds at lunch time, so their food must be good if they have repeat customers. It's harder to know just passing by, however, unless it's lunch time and crowded.

I'll usually buy something from the roach coach if I'm really hungry. Kebabs and gyros all the way.

You know, a few years ago a study showed that a lot of the vendors were not meeting sanitary and hygiene standards in the preparation and serving of food. Everyone feigned surprise, boycotted the carts for a few days, then they all returned in droves as if nothing ever happened.

I think convenience and PRICE drive people to these carts. You can't argue against their ubiquitous presence all over town, and the prices sure can't be beat.

However, I am one who never returned full time to get my lunch at the carts. I guess somehow I feel that the restaurants, as bad as they too can be, are subject to better inspections/standards/random checking by the authorities, etc. I realize that this may be a fallacious assumption, but I sleep better at night.

I do make an exception for the hot dog stand at South Street Sepaort where during my lunch hour in the summer, I can be found enjoying a cone, a hot dog, and a front row to all the beautiful women in the world dressed in sexy attire or sometimes even a minimum of it.

I've never had a problem with any of the hot dogs I've had from the stands. I don't do it every day but in the times I've had them, never gotten sick or had one that tasted bad.

In another forum this topic came up, and a lot of the replies implied (rhyme not intended) that the food from street carts are made from things we don't want to know about. Personally, I had a feeling that it was hogwash.

I suppose there could be sanitary issues, but apparently there hasn't been a mass attack of salmonella or ecoli.

There's a great halal stand in front of C-town right by the Broadway stop on the N train... recommended to get a chicken kebab.

I eat it all, hot dogs in central park, chicken kabobs, gyros, lamb and yellow rice with the yummy white sauce!

It has never made me sick (knock on wood)

As long as it's HOT (NOT warm) it's fine. Things like rice on a steam table can definitely give people food poisoning (both Staph. aureus and Bacillus cereus. Hot = good; warm = dangerous. Bacteria like warm, but not hot.

I do, but only occasionally. Mostly, gyros, shish-kebabs or hot dogs.
