Going to see an apartment steps away from #1 line subway. Is that area relatively safe? How are the amenities in that area? I don't cook, so great restaurants are must.

If it really is "steps" from the subway, then that's good - right near Columbia U.

You know, once upon a time not too long, long ago (I know this sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, but it isn't), a lot of people jumped off the train at 96/Broadway or 96/CPW as if there was a plague further up. That has changed immensely and you'll find the area becoming more diverse and with an increase in amenities.

Good luck with the apartment hunting and, if I might offer a tip, bring your checkbook, these apartments around town go pretty fast.

You will love the area, you have everything you need right outside your door. Great supermarkets, parks, and restaurants.

You could also use the considerably less pretentious name for the thoroughfare, West 110 Street. There's nothing wrong with it as a place to live. Particularly the further west along it you go. Near the #1 line? It'd take quite an effort to find someplace in a better district!
