I just came back from a trip to New York and I was impressed by how friendly and cool New Yorkers were to us.All of the service people (cabs, hotel, restaurants etc). Maybe it was because it was winter and they were not stressed out or maybe it is just because New Yorkers are used to dealing with lots of people. I am from Chicago and people say we are friendly but I found New Yorkers to be really be enjoyable. Am I right about this or was I just lucky. I told my wife New Yorkers are not living up to their sterotype.

For some reason I think New Yorkers are great hosts and hostesses but terrible guests. The stereotype you are referring to comes from our reputation as guests.

We are friendly! We've always been friendly! I think people misunderstand our rushing around for being rude or something.

It was supposed to be a secret! Once the word gets out that we don't bite the head off every person who comes to this city, we'll probably be inundated with tourists! (Oh wait...we had 18 million of 'em last year! What was I thinking?)

When I lived in Manhattan, I would see tourists every day on the subway with a map looking for thier next destination or walking around looking lost, and either myself or someone else always stopped to ask the person/people if they needed help getting somewhere. This is just one example of how NYers are friendly.

I think the distinction is that New Yorkers can be very friendly and helpful, but they may not necessarily have time and patience. If someone tries to stop a New Yorker who's charging down the street running to a meeting, then, no, that guy won't be friendly.

I guess that makes sense. Everyone needs to hurry sometimes. I've heard other things about NYers, though. I really did think that perhaps they weren't considered very friendly, by Southern standards at least. Perhaps that's understandable. It also may be possible that the old standard of Southern hospitality may be phasing out. It also may be that the person I spoke to about NY was just unluckly and ran into some especially cold-hearted people.

No kidding! I remember walking into some private office building in a quieter side of Manhattan looking for a restroom. The security lady promptly stood up and walked towards me. (I totally expected to be kicked out at this point.) Contrary to my expectations, she asked me what I needed. I asked her if they had a restroom I could use and she replied "the restroom's right behind you, what are you waiting for?" After using the restroom, I asked her if she ever gets any tourists or random people walking in to use the restroom. She said "never, I'm not supposed to let people in anyways."

Speaking sternly and directly is not rude.

I live in 'friendly' Texas, and have walked into random places countless times looking for a restroom only to be shooed right out.
